The Faith We Contemplate

"In the Our Father, the object of the first three petitions is the glory of the Father: the sanctification of his name, the coming of the kingdom, and the fulfillment of his will. The four others present our wants to him: they ask that our lives be nourished, healed of sin, and made victorious in the struggle of good over evil." -Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2857

The Our Father is also called the Lord's Prayer because it was taught by our Lord himself to the apostles when they asked him to teach them how to pray (Mt. 6:9-13). Essentially, it consists of three prayers for the glory of God followed by four requests for our physical and spiritual well-being.

The 7 Petitions of the Lord's Prayer

  1. Hallowed be thy Name
  2. Thy kingdom come
  3. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven
  4. Give us this day our daily bread
  5. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us
  6. Lead us not into temptation
  7. Deliver us from evil
